Doing It by Hannah Witton: A Book Review

In 2017, Hannah Witton - online sex educator, YouTuber, and blogger - wrote a book titled "Doing It: Let's Talk About Sex."  Although it may seem otherwise given the rather late arrival of this review, I did not waste a second at getting my hands on this book.  I've adored her for years now as an avid subscriber to her YouTube channel, and I knew that anything she could write just had to be absolutely golden.  I was not disappointed.  "Doing It" is a genuinely fun and interactive read chalk full of illustrations, and which discusses topics from virginity to masturbation, porn, and sexting.  It is formatted in a light and creative way which is easy to follow along with, informative, and personable.  "Doing It" is a prime example of how any book about sex should be written.  Would I give this book 5 stars?  Absolutely.

There are plenty of things that I love about "Doing It," but by far my favorite aspect is how it is formatted.  There are eye-catching illustrations on nearly every page.  Whether it's an enlarged quote, printed border, or anatomical drawing, there is plenty to look at.  A proper informative book does not need to be read in order.  You should be able to thumb through it and stop when something catches your eye.  Done properly, like in this book, there should be a lot of stopping.

Another aspect of "Doing It" that I absolutely adore is how Witton's voice shines through in all aspects of her writing.  As I had discovered her platform originally on YouTube, I am very familiar with her voice, and I can all but here her reading her book out loud to me when I read it.  It is very difficult to write in the exact same way that you speak; most people seem to have two separate voices when it comes to speaking and writing, but Witton does not seem to follow by that unspoken rule.  The Hannah Witton on YouTube is the very same Hannah Witton found between the pages of "Doing It."

As I think we've already established here, "Doing It" is no average book about sex, and the contents of her chapters support that opinion.  Of course, she does talk about puberty and menstruation, but she also talks about virginity, contraception, porn, and many other topics about sexuality that of course, all sex manuals should cover, but that seldom do.  In our fearful and sex negative culture, it is difficult enough to find a book about sex that provides medically accurate and inclusive information about our bodies, and Witton provides just that, and so much more.  Witton also makes an effort to feature the voices of other young adults and those in other areas of expertise in her book.  If she is not as knowledgeable in an aspect she wishes to write about, she does not try to force herself to embody a voice that is not hers; she has someone else write it for her.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hannah Witton's book "Doing It: Let's Talk About Sex."  "Doing It" is a brilliant, informative book that provides valuable knowledge about your body, how to take care of it, and the ways that it can still bring you pleasure.  It offers an honest and destigmatizing viewpoint about all aspects of sexuality, from puberty to porn.  "Doing It" is the type of book that I wish I had in my life much sooner, and exactly the type of book that I hope lands in the hands of a younger generation that is desperate for accurate information.
