Laid by Shan Boodram: A Book Review

Image
Shan Boodram, also know as Shan Boody, is a clinical sexologist, relational counselor, wedding photographer, online sex educator, YouTuber, and an author.  Truthfully, I have no idea how she balances all of it, but she somehow manages to master everything she takes on.  I've adored Boodram for years now; despite how misunderstood her video on open relationships was, it helped me figure out what I wanted from a relationship.  Her work on promoting happy and healthy relationships can be largely attributed to why I just celebrated my two year anniversary.  With how long I have admired her work, it was only a matter of time before I got my hands on her book. "Laid: Young People's Experiences with Sex in an Easy-Access Culture" was published in 2009, and made Boodram a Canadian Bestselling Author.  "Laid" solely featured the voices of young adults in order to share their stories in regards to sexually transmitted infections, virginity, sexual assault, and ho...

On The Basis Of Sex: A Movie Review

Image
"On The Basis of Sex" tells the true story of how Ruth Bader Ginsberg, along with her husband Marty Ginsberg took on a groundbreaking case that set the precedent for rewriting laws that discriminated on the basis of sex.  Ruth Ginsberg was depicted as a brilliant, independent, and vivacious woman who was still somewhat timid in nature.  It was evident in the film that her dream was to be able to represent those who needed help, and to stand up for people who could not stand up for themselves.  Based on this film, it can be inferred that that is the reason she pursued a career as a lawyer. Ruth Ginsberg was one out of nine women accepted into Harvard Law School's class of 1956.  As a woman in 1956, pursuing a degree in law was still generally disapproved of; in a dinner that the Dean of Harvard, Erwin Griswold, hosted at his house to welcome those nine women, he posed the question "how do you justify taking a spot from a qualified man?"  Ginsberg's w...

What FOSTA/SESTA Means For Sex Education

Image
We have entered a dark age of internet free speech.  Online communities that thrive based on the principle of free speech have been threatened by the passing of the FOSTA/SESTA laws.  These laws were passed back in March, and already we have begun to see the effects of these laws reverberating through popular social media platforms and other sites where communities got together to talk about sex.  Shortly after the passing of FOSTA/SESTA,  Craigslist  removed it's entire personals section, leaving only a note of well wishing towards the couples that met on their platform in its place.  Most recently, Facebook quietly passed a policy change that effectively bans even vague conversation about sex.  This is a step backward for communities that use public spaces to talk about sexual topics, spread online sex education, and encourage a positive view of human sexuality. The FOSTA/SESTA laws were originally intended as a way to crack down on sex traffick...

Goodbye Tumblr: The Death Of Adult Content on Tumblr

Image
Starting on December 17th of 2018, Tumblr banned all adult content from its platform in order to harbor a "safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community."  This update was announced two weeks before it was to go into effect, and modified the day that it was to go into effect.  Despite the recent amendments and clarification provided to Tumblr's policy shifts, this still spells certain doom for many underrated porn blogs, spaces for body positivity, and educational resources that have previously flourished on Tumblr.  Many blogs that felt they were going to be affected by this change, and many that were as content was beginning to get flagged have already left the platform.  Since Tumblr first launched in 2007, it has been driven by its supportive community.  It has become a place that celebrates the freedoms of speech and expression, and a curated resource for all types of bodies, belonging to all types of people, at all wa...
